KOL NIDRE
Thoughts on Kol Nidre Prayer
In just a couple of days’ time, we will be gathering for the holiest services of the Jewish year. Yom Kippur is a solemn day … a day of fasting, prayer, reflection, and redemption. As a community, we spend many hours together. At the other end of the day, we emerge refreshed and renewed.
The Yom Kippur services begin with a prayer called Kol Nidre . In this prayer, recited three times by the service leader, we renounce all vows and promises that we made over the past year – as if to begin the new year fresh – with a clean slate.
Why has the Kol Nidre prayer been so important to the Jewish people? Please take a few moments to read the brief pieces below. They are written by “voices” of Jewish life (Chabad, British Reform, and Conservative) – and offer mature perspectives on the anchor prayer of Yom Kippur.
Have an easy fast. May we all be inscribed in the Book of Life!
